About Ashtakoota Guna Milan
In classical Vedic practice, compatibility is assessed across eight Kutas (qualities) drawn from both partners' Moon nakshatras and Moon signs. The eight Kutas collectively total 36 points. A score of 18 or above is the conventional minimum for proceeding; 24–32 is considered good; above 32, excellent.
These thresholds are practitioner conventions, not inviolable laws. Classical texts note that the wise astrologer weighs the total pattern rather than demanding perfection in every Kuta.
Mangal Dosha: Mars in certain houses creates Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha) — roughly 40–50% of charts carry it in some form. It is a flag on temperament and marital dynamics, not a verdict on outcomes. When both partners are Manglik, the classical primary source (BPHS ch.81 v.48) cancels the dosha outright. Both the five-house BPHS-strict convention and the six-house standard convention are shown here. What the texts actually say →
